A Big Rapids man was killed last Thursday while helping to catch his stepdaughter’s dog that escaped.
Morris Zerlaut, 63, was on M-46 near Edgar Road when he was struck by a vehicle. Zerlaut had just caught the dog, named Rebel, and was putting the dog into his own vehicle when he was struck.
His wife, Debra, told Woodtv "I thought, 'Oh, no. Rebel got hit.' But when I pulled over and I got out, it was my husband laying there in a ball.”
She said "I started screaming and I started waving cars to stop, and they kept going by me and they kept running him over."
The 27-year-old driver who originally hit the man felt bad, stated Zerlaut's stepdaughter, Keri Keeney. "He apologized. He was crying.”
Zerlaut was pronounced dead upon arrival at Spectrum Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
A fund was set up at the Heckman Funeral Home in Howard City to help with the unexpected funeral costs.
