It took a shootout, but the United States beat Russia, 3-2, to take a solid lead in the Group A standings for men's hockey in the Sochi Winter Olympics.
Forward T.J. Oshie was the hero for Team USA scoring four shootout goals and he got solid support from Michigan hockey players Ryan Kesler, Max Pacioretty and defenseman Cam Fowler.
Fowler of Farmington Hills scored a goal in the second period and watched teammate Joe Pavelski add another in the third period to give Team USA a 2-1 lead.
Livonia's Kesler won several critical face-offs in regulation and with Pacioretty kept NHL All-Stars Alexander Ovechkin and Yevgeni Maklin off the scoreboard. Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk scored both of Russia's goals.
