The Michigan high school swim season is coming to a close, but first there is one last hoorah. This past weekend, the 22nd of February, conferences around the league had their conference championships. Now that conference championships are over it's time for teams to refocus for the state meet.
Win or lose in the conference championship the hardest part for teams going in to state is regaining that competitive focus. For teams that have lost it's a mater of getting back into the saddle and getting fired up once again. On the other hand refocusing for conference champions will be harder. Going in to state with a target on your back is not something to laugh off. The winning teams have to buckle down just like all the other teams and get some work done.
At this point in the season there is nothing that can be done to improve endurance or strength. Whatever was done during the season is what you have to work with. Now is the time for teams to look at things like starts and turns. Fine tuning swimmers will allow them to get a bit of an edge and hopefully cut some time off of their event.
