Michigan is among 41 states reporting widespread geographic influenza activity for the first week of January 2013, an increase from 31 states the previous week.
The widespread reports of the illness across the country included hospitalization of 2,257 people and leaving 18 children dead before the end of 2012.
Meanwhile, the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) is urging residents to get vaccinated after confirming the third flu-related death of a child this season. The MDCH has confirmed 252 flu cases so far during the 2012-13 season. The state lab totals likely represent only a portion of the actual flu cases in Michigan, but as of late December last year, the state lab had confirmed only 4 cases.
Below, you can use these links to track confirmed flu cases and vaccine spots near you by zip code. The MDCH says if people get the flu vaccine, they have a very, very good chance at avoiding the flu.
