Imagine watching a minor league hockey game between the Grand Rapids Griffins and the Toronto Marlies Monday night, featuring teams in the American Hockey League. Imagine watching in outdoors in freezing temperatures.
The Griffins are affiliated with the Detroit Red Wings and played outdoors at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers. The Wings and Tigers are both owned by Mike Ilitch.
It's been impressive the number of fans that have attended the outdoor games that have been at Comerica in recent days, including the 25,000-plus fans last weekend for the Michigan State vs. Michigan Great Lakes Invitational hockey game.
This is all leading up to the New Year's Day outdoor game at Michigan Stadium featuring the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs with an expected crowd of 110,000.
But the attendance for the Griffins-Marlies game was impressive. Temperatures were in the teens Monday night. Yet 20,337 fans watched the game which ended 4-3 in the Marlies favor with a shootout.
It just shows how much Michigan fans like their hockey, inside and outside.
