The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team defeated the visiting Iowa State Cyclones squad, 196.825-195.125, in the regular season finale on Saturday at Crisler Center in Ann Arbor. The victory came on Senior Day and improved the No. 3-ranked Wolverines to 17-1 overall.
U-M's three seniors -- co-captain Katie Zurales, Natalie Beilstein, and Brittnee Martinez -- each had top-flight performances in front of an appreciative crowd, as did junior co-captain Joanna Sampson, who tallied the meet's high all-around score of 39.500 and earned the floor exercise title with a 9.925. Zurales placed third in the all-around competition at 38.850 and nailed a 9.900 vault for fourth best in that event. Beilstein took home the uneven bars title with a 9.925 and tied for first place on the vault with an identical 9.925. Martinez had the high score for the Wolverines on balance beam at 9.850, which tied her for second overall on the apparatus.
Up next for Michigan, which ended tied with Minnesota for the first-ever Big Ten regular season crown as a result of Minnesota's win against Ohio State on Saturday, is the 2013 Big Ten Championships at Jenison Field House in East Lansing, MI next Saturday, March 23. The Big Ten Network will carry the postseason action.
