Michigan CPL holders can carry in Wisconsin starting in November

Michigan Concealed Pistol License holders will be able to bring their concealed pistols into Wisconsin when that state’s new carry law takes effect on November 1st.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice recently announced that Michigan is one of the 25 states whose licenses will be recognized by Wisconsin under the provisions of 2011 Wisconsin Act 35. Wisconsin residents may only carry in their home state with a Wisconsin issued license. (Michigan has the same requirement for Michigan residents).

In an ironic twist, Michigan residents with valid CPL’s will be able to carry in Wisconsin long before any Wisconsin residents will be able to do so. This is because the Wisconsin DOJ will not even provide carry license applications until the law takes effect on November 1st.  It is not yet known how long it will take the state to process applications, but with up to an estimated 100,000 Wisconsin residents expected to apply in the first few months, the wait time may be considerable.

The new law makes Illinois the only state not to have some sort of concealed carry law on the books. (However, there are no carry licenses issued in Hawaii, by policy, even though the state has a “may issue” carry law).

The passage of the Wisconsin carry law is especially important for Michigan residents of the U.P. near the state’s common borders who risked criminal prosecution if they inadvertently crossed the state line while carrying a concealed pistol.
