Michigan chooses Mark Schlissel to be next president

At a special meeting today in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan Board of Regents voted unanimously to name Mark S. Schlissel, M.D., Ph.D. as the institution's next president. Provost at Brown University, the 56-year-old Schlissel will begin his new role on July 1.

Following a long search for a successor to current U-M president Mary Sue Coleman, who announced last year that she would retire, the Board chose Schlissel, a respected biomedical researcher and Brown's provost since 2011. He will be Michigan's 14th president. Prior to his work at Brown, Schlissel was Dean of Biological Sciences at the University of California at Berkeley.

In a detailed announcement today on the U-M website, Schlissel is quoted in part as saying, "I will bring to Michigan a fierce commitment to the importance of public research universities, a strong and personal belief in the ability of education to transform lives, and the understanding that excellence and diversity are inextricably linked."
