Michigan athletes @ Sochi Olympics: Karly Shorr of Milford in snowboard finals

U.S. snowboarder Karly Shorr was all smiles after a solid second run in the Ladies' Slopestyle qualifier earned her a spot in the new event's finals on Sunday.

Shorr, who was born in Commerce Township and raised in Milford, finished fourth in her heat, which allows her to skip the semifinals and go directly to the finals. She actually finished 6th overall in the two-heat qualifying event on Thursday, but the top four athletes in each heat do not have to endure the wear and tear of snowboarding again in the semifinals.

Many snowboarders have complained about the slopestype course, including American ladies finalist Jamie Anderson. Anderson, who finished second overall in the qualifier, skipped an optional second run because she was concerned about the questionable condition of the course.

The 19-year-old Shorr may find it tough earning a medal in the snowslope with the veteran Anderson, Australia's Torah Bright, Austria's Anna Gasser and Switzerland's Isabel Derungs headed to Sunday's finals. Anderson is one of the favorites in this event, which requires precision snowboarding and artistic aerial moves as the snowboarder speeds down a steep slope that contains a series of jumps.
