Michelle Shocked gave slurs against the GLBT community, reported MSN on March 19. The alternative folk rock artist ranted at a San Francisco concert the night of March 17. "When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization and Jesus will come back," said Shocked. "I believe the Bible is the word of God." After an intermission, she also said, "You are going to leave here and tell people 'Michelle Shocked said God hates f------s.'"
Her management ended the show by cutting off Shocked's microphone and stage lights. The 51-year-old continued to sing for remaining fans. The fall-out from the rant has meant cancellation of shows and criticism from fans on venues such as Twitter.

Apparently, Shocked has never officially come out as lesbian. However, the woman who married Bart Bull in 1992 and divorced him in 2004 has made statements that could make one think she is at least bisexual. "I was with my first woman lover about a year and a half ago. To be honest, the real fear of coming out of the closet, not fear, but the real pressures of coming out of the closet had been if you had certain problems identifying yourself one way or the other," Shocked allegedly said in 1990.
Despite the ambiguity, Shocked has been an icon for the GLBT community. Today, the singer is a member of the West Angeles Church of God in Christ.
