Michelle Shocked lived up to her name but not her reputation in a San Francisco Yoshi's performance Sunday, March 17. The San Francisco Guardian notes that she was called an honorary lesbian in 2008, but apparently her born again Christian persona could no longer accept equal rights to members of the lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender (LGBT) community.
When they stop Prop 8 and force priests at gunpoint to marry gays, it will be the downfall of civilization and Jesus will come back.
So gay marriage is going to end civilization when the brutal sins of greed, hatred, unforgiving and deception have not? What makes this sin more special than the others of Leviticus that we ignore, like that cotton-blend blouse in her closet? And someone please tell us where priests are being made to perform these ceremonies at gunpoint.
Many observers were stunned more by the source than the message. Queerty points out she "has been open about being a born again Christian, but was still active in progressive politics" including being arrested at an Occupy L.A. event in 2011.
God loves all His children. Of all the sins His followers must avoid, hatred ranks highest on the list. When you distort things as she has done, hatred is what fuels your free speech. The reaction is never going to be constructive—the audience walked out and Yoshi's literally pulled the plug on her performance as she tried to play through the ruckus her comments had caused.
All real Christians can do is continue to show God's love and grace, knowing they, too, are sinners in need of those things. "By what measure ye mete, it shall be measured unto you again," (Matthew 7:2b).
