The good news, I suppose, is that critics of the Obamas are really having to reach to find things worth criticizing, and even then, the arguments sound hollow to all but the most extreme of extremists, which, unfortunately, number in the millions.
First Lady Michelle Obama is vacationing for five days in Spain and staying at a 5-star hotel. She can’t go anywhere without security, so that remains a rather large tab wherever she goes, assuming she does not stay home and lounge around her rather exclusive DC accommodations. Even then, being First Lady is not cheap, and it has always been an accepted part of the American tab for day-to-day living expenses.
Still, some people (namely white Republicans) are so incensed by the First Lady’s vacation that they are publicly condemning her. Her critics claim that going on a luxury 5-star vacation in Spain sends the wrong message to millions of unemployed Americans who can’t afford to be warm or stay medicated. Somehow, her critics might feel better if she were suffering right alongside them, though I suspect that if the roles were switched, the First Lady’s critics just might say to her “let them eat cake”.
Out of all the truly legitimate things to complain about, the fact that critics of the Obamas are chastising Michelle for a luxury Spanish vacation may actually be a good thing. Ultimately, no one cares, and the Obama Administration knows this because they researched it. People like seeing their ‘queen’ out and about acting queenly. If she were someone not well liked, like Nancy Reagan, it might be a different story. But the whole world loves Michelle Obama, and as far as her subjects are concerned, she can do no wrong. Sure, we will tire of her in due time, but for now, she is our queen, our First Lady, and we love seeing her look royal on a world stage. Besides, it really is good for business, and that’s what we need the most here in the U.S.
Critics of the First Lady are like those little dogs that you can never get to shut up. They are so hyperactive with no attention span that they yap at everything that even remotely distracts them. For those people, life is a distraction, but from what, it is hard to say. These critics don’t like the Obamas (possibly for no other reason than skin color) and would rather worship hillbilly white trash like the Palins as they go cross country to shake every Neiman Marcus they can for clothes that make them look intelligent. Michelle doesn’t need to be classed-up or gussied-up. Michelle is the elegance and grace that Jackie Kennedy rarely was and that Sarah Palin never will be. Sometimes, that is so hard for others to accept.
Michelle really should tell her critics ‘let them eat cake’, but that would look bad and convey the wrong message - and it ultimately would only hurt her image. Instead, she is taking the high road, paved with cobblestones and Spanish jewels that become less pedestrian when Michelle Obama is around. And it’s not like Michelle is a raving beauty. It’s her style and her essence that makes her shine stunningly. How could a bunch of dull, repressed, less-rich-than-ten-years-ago Republicans ever hope to compete with that?
At some point, can we please get back to the real crises at hand, namely two losing wars and an economy going off a cliff? Just thinking about all the pots of hot water we, as a country, are in, and I too am feeling the need to escape, just like the First Lady.
Hopefully, Michelle is taking solace in knowing that she is having a vacation that few will ever get to have or enjoy. Christ, if we take those perks away from the office of the Presidency, then really, what’s the point? She could have stayed a high-powered, low-profiled lawyer and taken an even better vacation – on someone else’s nickel.
