According to a Jan. 17 WWD report, First Lady Michelle Obama’s staffers requested samples from numerous designers for the First Lady’s Inaugural day wardrobe. The request for samples was reportedly sent to the designers normally worn by Lady O including, Michael Kors, Narciso Rodriguez, Marchesa, Derek Lam, Prabal Gurung, Tory Burch, Tracy Reese, Naeem Khan, Thakoon and her first inaugural gown designer, Jason Wu.
WWD also asked several designers to sketch dresses they would love to see Lady O and her daughters Malia and Sasha wear for the big day. Lela Rose and Monique Lhuillier offered some stunning designs for the First Lady, while designer Tommy Hilfiger designed tuxedo style looks for the first daughters. “My designs for the first daughters are inspired by American spirit with bold pops of color in classic red, white and blue,” the designer said. “Sasha’s cropped tux jacket over an A-line silk dress takes a youthful twist on her mother’s classic style. Malia has great style, and I thought it would be fun to see her in a fashion-forward tuxedo jumpsuit.”
As for the First Lady, nearly 20 designers have reportedly already sent clothes in response to her staffers’ requests. Those names include Michael Kors, Derek Lam, Naeem Khan, Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Prabal Gurung, Jason Wu, Bibhu Mohapatra, Thakoon Panichgul, Tracy Reese, Chris Benz, Tory Burch, Narciso Rodriguez, Zac Posen, Maria Cornejo, Thom Browne, Barbara Tfank and Laura Smalls.
According to WWD, while a few fashion insiders alluded to signed confidentiality agreements, one or two referred to Lady O as “a client.” All of the industry sources contacted by WWD said they have no idea what the First Lady will rock on Inauguration day. Like the rest of America, they will have to wait until she arrives at the Inaugural Ball.
