President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, together with Vice President Joe Biden and wife Dr. Jill Biden, took part in a ceremonial public inauguration for their second term in office on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol January 21, 2013 in Washington, DC.
In front of an estimated audience of between 800,000 to a million people, Barack Obama was sworn in by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, while Vice President Joe Biden was sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. In comparison, about 1.8 million people attended President Barack Obama's first inauguration in 2009.
A White House official has confirmed that the First Lady is wearing a navy Thom Browne coat and dress. Reportedly, the fabric was developed based on the style of a Menswear silk tie.
Also, the black leather and silver belt and purple leather gloves are from J.Crew and Michelle’s earrings were designed by Cathy Waterman. Michelle Obama also wore black boots by designer Reed Krakoff.
Incidentally, Michelle Obama also wore a Reed Krakoff ensemble for the official swearing in ceremony yesterday.
At the end of the Inaugural festivities, Mrs Obama’s inaugural outfit and accessories will go to the National Archives.
Also, Dr. Jill Biden, the wife of Vice President Joe Biden, wore a Lela Rose silk bow coat over her whit and grey sleeveless dress.
Daughters Malia and Sasha looked lovely in their violet and indigo winter coats, respectively. They kept warm bobbing animatedly to the music in the chill air as much for warmth as for enjoying the musical performances by Kelly Clarkson and Beyoncé.
Craig Robinson, who bears a striking resemblance to his sister Michelle Obama, was also in attendance and added a pop of color to his dark suit with an orange tie. Their mother, Marian Shields Robinson, wore a pretty peach scarf with her camel colored winter coach.
President Obama and Vice President Biden both looked dapper in their dark suits and royal blue ties, appropriate with royal blue being the color for the U.S. Democratic Party.
Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter were also in attendance.
Master of Ceremonies today was Senator Charles Schumer, who was appointed Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. He continued to speak at the Inaugural Luncheon in the Statuary Hall at the U.S. Capitol building, which included lovely peach colored rose centerpieces on each table as part of the décor.
Barack and Michelle Obama sat with Vice President Joe Biden and wife Dr. Jill Biden at one side and Speaker of the House John Boehner and his wife Deborah Gunlack on the other.
Highlights of the inauguration included performances by James Taylor, who sang “America the Beautiful,” Kelly Clarkson, who performed the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and Beyonce, who performed the National Anthem of the United States.
