Thursday, September 15, Michele Malkin, conservative pundit and author of "The Culture of Corruption" told the Fox & Friends hosts that the title of her new book was "rather prophetic" in light of the Solyndra scandal, adding, "Solyndra is the mother-of-all big green boondoggles... chip of the green iceberg."
And," she continued," it does go straight to the White House. What you see in these e-mails and in the information that was brought to light at the House hearing yesterday, was White House officials breathing down the necks - boots on the necks - of OMB officials and the federal folks in charge of assessing the credit worthiness of Solyndra." Note: The Washington Post has made these e-mails available in pdf format. The emails referenced by Malkin were reported by the Post to include revelations that the White House was very concerned about the political "optics" if Solyndra went under. Following is an excerpt from that report:
A White House official fretted privately that the Obama administration could suffer serious political damage if it gave additional taxpayer support to the beleaguered solar-panel company Solyndra, according to newly released e-mails.The firm had burned through millions of dollars and in January still tottered near collapse. The official wanted the government’s top budget official to warn Obama’s energy secretary about the risk, according to the e-mails.
Dismissing any possible inclination to lean towards due diligence, Malkin accused the Obama White House of throwing caution to the wind for political gain - "the photo opportunities they had scheduled for Solyndra to put Barack Obama out in front as a green jobs innovator."
Malkin pointed out that "There were so many kinds of green deals that need the same kind of scrutiny." She was speaking of a probing investigation now underway to determine, if as she claims, political gain was put ahead of good stewardship of the taxpayer dollar as many in Congress fear may be the case in the Solyndra bankruptcy, which leaves taxpayers on the hook for their loans of approximately $500 million.
Speaking of several "green" deals that the Obama administration had made, at least by the count of MSM, Malkin blistered the airs calling the Solyndra scandal a mere" chip of the green iceberg."
