Figure-skating darling Michelle Kwan, 32, married White House staffer and Coast Guard Lieutenant Clay Pell in an emotional ceremony on January 19 in Providence, Rhode Island. The bride, dressed in a classic ivory gown by Vera Wang, told People Magazine, “There were so many tears shed, especially from me!”
Kwan’s groom, 31, admitted to being caught up in the emotion of the day, too. “As she was walking into the church, I could feel her,” Pell told People Magazine. “She has such warmth for me and I just felt this fire the whole day, and I still do.”
After the ceremony at First Unitarian Church, Kwan and Pell walked beneath the traditional arch of sabers, formed by his friends in the Coast Guard. Guests lit sparklers to welcome the happy couple out of the church, and they enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing at the Hope Club.
“We were having the time of our lives,” Kwan told People. Turning to her new husband she added, “You danced like no one was watching! I love that!”
In addition to enjoying her new life as a wife, Kwan will continue to serve on the Council to Empower Women and Girls Through Sports, an appointment she received from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in June. Pell will continue working as a member of the White House National Security staff.
