Michelle Castro, former salsa World Champion and the co-organizer of the San Francisco Salsa Congress, announced on Monday that she will be co-directing Mambonova Dance Company in their upcoming season.
The news came as a surprise as Michelle is also the co-director of PB&G Dance Company, a world-renowned salsa dance company which won the first World Salsa Championships and has performed all over the world.
The team has been on hiatus for over two years now, as co-director Ricardo Sanchez has taken time off to focus on his family. Michelle recently returned from Dubai, and has begun teaching salsa lessons in the South Bay, but this is the first team she is directing since her return. She will be replacing outgoing Lucie Samuel who has been co-director of Mambonova since its foundation.
Mambonova Dance Company, directed by Hector Reyes, is one of the top salsa teams in the South Bay, and is the only team south of San Francisco that teaches the "On2" style of salsa. The team has kept a fairly low profile in the salsa scene, aside from their monthly social, but they can be expected to become more active with the addition of Michelle Castro to the team. The team recently performed at the Las Vegas Salsa Congress, their first major salsa event outside of the Bay Area.
The team will be holding auditions the next season of their team on Sunday, July 28 at 1pm in Mountain View. Interested dancers should contact Hector at hector@mambonovasf.com.
