Michele Consiglio, DVM named Rhode Island Veterinarian of the Year

Michele Consiglio, DVM, of the West Shore Animal Clinic, Warwick, R.I. was selected as Veterinarian of the Year by the Rhode Island Veterinary Medical Association at their annual meeting on December 5th at the Redwood Library and Arboreatum in Newport, R.I.

RIVMA President Jane Linden praised Dr. Consiglio for her work with the Rhode Island Disaster Animal Response Team which opened emergency animal shelters during Hurricane Irene in 2011 and Hurricane Sandy in 2012. In her acceptance speech Michele thanked the staff of West Shore Animal Clinic and fellow RIDART volunteers. Michele said she is surrounded by great people, which makes it easy to do great work. As far as the RIDART shelter deployments she said "It was like a big slumber party" referring to large stretches of downtime during which the shelter was empty while waiting for residents to arrive. Under Michele's direction the emergency pet shelter at the Thayer Arena in Warwick was open and accepting pets owned by people who had been displaced from their homes by the severe weather.
