The Vancouver Sun has announced today that Michael J. Fox will return to do an NBC comedy. He will play a newscaster who left because of Parkinson’s disease and has now returned because of a new treatment that quells his symptoms. This is surely exciting news. It mirrors Michael’s real life and gives us all a chance to see him again on the small screen.
David Bauder, writer for THE ASSOCIATED PRESS reports that Michael J. Fox announced last year, “that drugs have helped minimize the physical tics of Parkinson’s and has enabled him to take on more acting jobs.”
Michael Fox’s new series does not even have a title, “yet is a key piece of NBC’s strategy to build upon a revival that has brought the network back from many years in the ratings wilderness.”
Fox will play a father of three children in New York where the filming will take place. The show should debut sometime in September. He will juggle home life, work, and his public life. The world has idolized him in real life. The show will mirror that as well. However, according to Jennifer Salke, the network’s entertainment president, the show will show that, ’he’s just a regular guy who gets frustrated, who gets mad at having to sit at home.”
Canadians are happy to hear of his return to acting. The Canadian born actor is an icon in Canada. Michael was born in Edmonton, Alberta on June 9, 1961. Like any true Canadian Michael’s love was hockey. However, he was too short to compete. Fox is five feet four inches tall. This disappointment paved the way for acting. He transferred his passion to drama. At 15 he made his debut in the CBS series “Leo and Me.” After that he played in the CBS movie “Letters from Frank” filmed in Canada before leaving for Los Angeles.
He became an instant star in 1982 when he played the role of Alex P. Keaton in “Family Ties.” He also played in the TV series “Spin City” and made Marty McFly a household name in his “Back to The Future” movies.
Michael J. Fox added the J. to his name for acting purposes. Hollywood already had an actor by the name of Michael Fox. Michael Fox, the actor from New York, appeared in several movies and TV roles including the coroner in “Perry Mason.”
Michael J. Fox became the more popular actor. However, this courageous man is more than an actor. Michael J. Fox is a testament of how people with Parkinson’s disease can still follow some of their dreams and aspirations. He received the Order of Canada for his work in Parkinson's Disease.
