Vick with a dog

Is the Michael Vick conflict fueled by dog lovers or is there something more sinister afoot? Michael Vick is almost equally known for being the highest paid QB in the NFL at one time and as a convicted felon for a dog fighting enterprise. Therefore, upon learning of an online petition to ban Vick from training camp this summer, it is apparent that there are still those who cannot accept that he is now a part of the NY Jets organization. Here we go again. Of course, there is a side to this controversy that many may choose to ignore. These facts being:

• The sentencing guidelines for this crime (dog fighting) involves no jail time for first offenders, Vick served two years • Dog fighting arrived in the United States in the late 1800’s and is stronger than ever today • Many pit bulls come from blood lines where dogs were breed to be extremely aggressive and therefore will attack without being trained to fight • Even with proper training and care, it is possible that a pit bull will turn out overly aggressive some experts say • From 2005 to 2013 some 283 American suffered death due to dog bite injury • Dog fighting purses can be as much as $100,000 or more in this Country • According to The Humane Society of the United States approximately 3-4 million dogs are euthanized each year- staggering

Michael Vick was convicted, served time, and to all appearances is remorseful. One cannot help but wonder if there is any penalty large enough to satisfy, dare we say, the blood lust of some of the more vocal of the professed animal lovers. To be fair, this might not be a correct assessment in which case if this is a misconception; perhaps someone can shed new light on the subject. Not to be crude, but perhaps some of the dogged enthusiasm could be used to comfort the families of fatal dog attack victims or to help shut down the numerous and certainly most vicious dog fighting operations. When all is said and done, awareness and education could help all sides. And for the Christians that advocate violence of any kind, prayer is the way to go.
