Pitt will play the role of Mason Verger, who is described as “an unstable wealthy patient of Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) who begins a dangerous cat-and-mouse game with the deadly serial killer.” He will make an appearance late in the upcoming second season.
This will be the first time Pitt has been in a television series since his character was killed off in the second season of HBO’s Prohibition-era drama. He has made several film appearances since then, including 2012’s “Seven Psychopaths” and will soon be seen again on the big screen in two upcoming films. The first is “Rob the Mob,” which opens in March, and “I Origins,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year.
Gary Oldman played the role of Mason in the 2001 Ridley Scott-directed “Hannibal,” which was based on the Thomas Harris novel of the same name. NBC’s series takes place before the events in that film, as well as before the events that happened in Harris’ “Red Dragon.”
“Hannibal” returns to NBC on Feb. 28.
