At least it didn't happen on Valentine's Day.
According to a Jan. 2 report from PEOPLE, record-breaking Olympian Michael Phelps has broken up with model girlfriend, Megan Rossee, after less than a year of dating.
Although official confirmation of a split hasn't come from either parties' camps, both have gone the route of many young celebs by alluding to a breakup via cryptic tweets and instagram photos.
"Things happen for a reason...#notme," Phelps tweeted on Dec. 31, just a few days after photos had been posted of the gold medalist and Rossee visiting the National Aquarium in Phelps' hometown of Baltimore.
Rossee posted a photo after the alleged split with the quote, "A woman's loyalty is tested when her man has nothing. A man's loyalty is tested when he has everything."
"Yup. #truth," Rossee wrote above the photo.
Ouch.
The duo furthered speculation by spending New Year's Eve apart. Rossee posted a photo on instagram celebrating with friends and wrote, "The love of my life is the love between friends...happy New Year! :)"
TMZ originally broke the story that the couple had gone kaput, stating that Phelps had initiated the breakup when he "felt the relationship wasn't going anywhere" and "decided to end it so he could pursue other options."
