On Thursday, November 3, after Michael Moore spoke at Auraria Campus about his new book Here Comes Trouble, he spoke at Occupy Denver. An estimated 1000 people were gathered to hear Moore speak. Moore praised Occupy Denver for their solidarity with Occupy Wall Street and explained that he participates in general assemblies in New York.
During Moore’s speech someone sarcastically yelled, “When is your occupy movie coming out?” After a brief pause Moore stated, “I’ve been making occupy movies for twenty years.” Towards the end of Moore’s speech some people in the crowd started yelling obscenities and heckling Moore. Moore brought up the topic of provocateurs explaining that there are many enemies of the occupy movement because “corporations are scared shitless.” He went into the topic further explaining that the movement should not be deterred by people promoting division or violence in the protest, Moore stated that angry people suspected of being provocateurs “should be surrounded by love.”
Many have criticized Moore for being a very wealthy person himself. When confronted by this question at the Occupy Denver rally, Moore explained that he is well-off but rich people aren’t always the problem, the system is the main problem. When questioned about his wealth by CBS4 reporter Evrod Cassimy Moore replied, “I want taxes raised on people who do well, including myself.” Moore pointed out that his favorite sign at the protest was one that stated, “Economic Democracy, Not Corporate Capitalism.”
