October is a month to give support to those causes that mean so much to us personally.
A designer with a heart as big as his customer following is Michael Kors. Kors has been a huge supporter of the World Food Programme in the fight to end global hunger and he has partnered with the United Nations for this initiative. World Food Day is set to arrive on October 16, 2013, a day that demands that everybody do their part to wipe out global hunger.
But last week, Michael Kors spread his generosity even further. On October 2, 2013, he joined forces with comedian and fashion critic, Joan Rivers, to take part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the charity known as God's Love We Deliver. The Soho-based nonprofit organization cooks and delivers meals to people living with severe illnesses in the New York City Metropolitan area. They continue to have an outpouring of volunteers who enjoy giving to others such as the very fashionable Heidi Klum. On this bright day in October, the event marked the official launch of their expansion project. It was significant to the organization and its members because it means that God's Love We Deliver will soon have almost double the amount of space and the capacity to go from preparing one million to two million meals annually. The new facility promises to have a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, an expanded delivery and pack-out area, an enclosed loading dock and greatly increased refrigeration and freezer space.
Michael Kors has been one of the key contributors from the very start. If not for his generosity, the expansion would not have been fully possible. The warmhearted designer donated $5 million and earlier this year, he was named to the God's Love We Deliver Board of Directors. When the new facility is finally complete, it will be named in his honor.
“Today marks the beginning of a project of great significance to not only all of us at God’s Love, but to a growing number of people across the metropolitan area who rely on our services,” said Karen Pearl, President & CEO of God’s Love We Deliver. “We are thrilled to be taking this important step to better serve the most vulnerable people in our community, and honored to mark this milestone for our organization with many of the people who made it all possible.”
“I am so excited to be here today to break ground on the Michael Kors Building for God’s Love We Deliver,” said Michael Kors. “I’ve been working with God’s Love for over 20 years now, and I’ve always been amazed by the work that they do. With this expansion, I know that we can help feed even more people and continue to reach all of those in need.”
“The City Council is proud to support this expansion that will provide increased kitchen space, additional nutrition education workshops, and welcome more volunteers,” said City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, a longtime advocate for God’s Love. “I want to thank and congratulate everyone who worked to make sure God’s Love We Deliver will continue their mission of feeding thousands of hungry New Yorkers every day.”
Many are looking forward to October 16th when the God's Love Golden Heart Gala will take place. Kors will be honoring Hillary Clinton at the gala.
All present for the groundbreaking event, inclusive of Kors and Rivers, put on their hard hats with the insignia of God's Love We Deliver and the pair was joined by Karen Pearl, CEO & President of the organization along with Blaine Trump, Vice Chairman of the Board and Michael Sonnett.
Once the business was attended to, the celebration got underway and a cake depicting the image of the future building was served. The expansion project is expected to be fully complete by late 2014, early 2015.
It is easy to see why Michael Kors is one of the all-time favorite designers. His warmth is strongly felt far and wide as he helps dreams to become reality.
