Michael Johnson looks to break out

On top of the stacked main card for UFC 168, there are some interesting fights taking place before the brighter lights go on. One to keep your eye on is a matchup between Michael Johnson and Gleison Tibau. Johnson, the former TUF winner, appeared ready to break into a few top 10 lists prior to back-to-back losses at the hands of Myles Jury and Reza Madadi. Speaking to UFC.com, “The Menace” claims he might have lost a bit of focus prior to those defeats:

“Absolutely. Not taking anything away from the two guys I lost to, but I did lose track a little bit. You go on a three fight win streak like that and you start thinking you’re unbeatable, and that was a huge mistake I made that I’ll never make again. Going into the Myles Jury fight, I was like, there’s no way he can beat me. I went in too relaxed and then I lost.

The same thing with Reza. I had a huge adrenalin dump, especially after the tension between us at weigh ins, and going into the second round after a first round in which I almost had him finished, my mind just went away from me. That’s a perfect example that shows how strong you have to be mentally to get through these opponents in the UFC, and I lost track of that.”

Johnson will face a man in Tibau has who has won his last 2 fights. Most recently at UFC 164, the Brazilian beat Jamie Varner by a split a decision. The American Top Team product is dangerous on the ground, but 7 of his last 9 fights have been decided by the judges.

UFC 168 goes down this Saturday in Las Vegas.
