Michael Johns, an American Idol season 7 alum, died Friday of a reported blood clot. The 35-year-old Australian singer-songwriter finished in eighth place among the 2008 Idol finalists. Fox network and Johns’ family released statements today confirming the singer’s passing.
Reports the Associated Press today via ABC News: “His family says it appreciated the support streaming in from around the world but said the loss of ‘a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle, and friend’ was devastating. Fox called Johns ‘an incredible talent’ and a part of the show's family who would be missed.”
Johns’ elimination from Idol came as a surprise since the singer never dropped into the bottom three contestants as voted on by the viewing audience. In the Idols following Johns’ season, a “save” element was introduced, largely due to the singer’s shocking elimination. In 2009, Johns released an album, entitled “Hold Back My Heart,” and followed that with an EP, “Love & Sex” in 2012.

According to the The Hollywood Reporter, Johns died of a blood clot that started in his ankle and made its way up his leg. Sources say Johns went to see a doctor on Thursday because of the pain in his lower leg; the next day he was found dead on the couch at a friend’s apartment.
“Our family is devastated by the passing of our beloved Michael, a wonderful husband, son, brother, uncle and friend,” Johns’ family said in a statement today. “We appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from all corners of the globe. Please keep Michael in your thoughts and respect our need to grieve privately in this difficult time.”
Johns’ Twitter fan page confirmed the singer’s death with a pair of tweets that read:
“It is with a heavy heart and inconsolable sadness that we confirm the passing of our friend Michael Johns. No other details will b avail at this time. Please respect the privacy of Mike’s family and friends as we know u will. Members and admin of @mjohnsonline pass on their prayers.”
