Michael Jackson Dead at 50 - MICHAEL A. MARIANT/AP PHOTO
Today is a very sad day for music fans, my generation, and the world as a whole as the news of Michael Jackson's death come across the screen, sending shockwaves that will ripple for days to come.
Michael started his career with his brothers making up the Jackson Five at the age of 11. His vocal and dancing talent quickly soared him to a solo career at the age of 13. He was the "Most Successful Entertainer of All Time" landing 13 Grammy Awards, 13 number one singles in his solo career—more than any other male artist putting him into the "Guinness Book of World Records". He help make MTV an icon with his videos, especially with one of my all time favorites, "Thriller". But he was a troubled soul also.
In the Mid 1980's, Michaels appearance started changing,due in part to surgeries, but also due to two skin related illnesses Vitiligo ( a common yet chronic dermatologic disorder that causes depigmentation in patches of skin) and Lupus (an autoimmune disease, one type being SLE, that can attack the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys, and nervous system. Rarer in men then women). Both of these diseases causes sensitivity to sunlight. And yes, his behavior got just as bizarre as his appearance, more stranger the older he got. Who can forget the "Dangling" of his child off a balcony, the strange marriages, and the infamous Child Molestation court case.
But through it all, Michael retained a strong fan base, and continued to gain fans throughout the world. Although I had my doubts of his mental state at times, one thing I can never deny is the talent that his possessed and the contributions he made to the world not only through his music, but through using his status the bring awareness to many causes such as HIV/AIDS. He may have had a tormented soul, he suffered a lot of trauma such as alleged child abuse, and he may have caused pain to some. But one thing for sure, he had talent, and Michael Jackson was and will always be known as "The King Of Pop"
