Michael Fortunato of "Catfish" fame has died. On Oct. 16, MSN reported that while an autopsy report has not yet been completed it is believed that Fortunato died from a pulmonary embolism that resulted from deep vein thrombosis. Fortunato died in Hartford, Conn. on Saturday.
Fortunato appeared on a Sept. episode of the popular MTV reality show "Catfish" which brings people with online relationships together for the first time. Fortunato had been "dating" Ashley Sawyer for seven years online and on the episode "Ashley and Mike," the two finally met. The two were still in contact but it is unknown whether or not they were in a committed relationship.
Michael Fortunato reportedly texted Ashley and told her that he needed to go to the hospital but she says that he didn't end up going... until it was too late. His sister says that he decided to drive himself to the hospital later in the day but he ended up getting into a car accident. He swerved and crashed into a fence. Paramedics arrived on the scene and transported Fortunato to the hospital. He died that evening.
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of Michael Fortunato. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time," an MTV spokesperson said in a statement (via MSN).
Michael Fortunato will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and fans.
