It’s Thursday February 6, 2014 and the first day of the Michael David Dunn case. If you’re unfamiliar with whom Michael Dunn is, then take find out about him (here). The trial didn’t begin until early afternoon when the father and mother of Jordan Davis/ (Ron Davis and Lucia McBath) came through the fourth floor and was escorted to the 229 person capacity courtroom. Court attendance was not packed; approximately 1/3 white and 2/3 minority.
Judge Russell Healey instructed the 10 female & 6 male, 11 white/5 minority, 9 with children/7 without, 1 divorced/10 married/5 single professional jurors; on the expectations of their duties. The court The Prosecution for the State of Florida gave her opening statement followed by the Defense Attorney gave his. 9 bullets, 10 shots, the SUV drove away after the shots were fired; what really happened?
1:48 p.m. – The state calls its first witness; Jordan Davis’ steady girlfriend Elia Harris formerly of Wolfson High School. She never saw Davis with a weapon, yet the Defense Attorney said that Davis had a tactical knife on him.
Steven Smith – He was working in Deerwood when he went to the GATE gas station & heard the loud music, so he parked away from Davis’ vehicle. He sarcastically told the store clerk that he wished they would turn the music up. Smith didn’t see a weapon from the SUV, but he saw Dunn fire his gun.
2:15 p.m. – Video from inside the GATE station was shown in court. 3 then 4 then 3 shots were heard on the video as the store clerk & customer ducked for cover.
Michael Dunn sat expressionless in a green sweater, green pants and white shirt. Davis’ Mom & Dad sat on the third row to the left of the Dunn table. There was a courtroom break from 2:40 – 3:10 p.m.
Andrew Williams – was a cabinet salesman and was on his way to Avenues Mall with his wife & 2 teens. They wound up at the GATE when he heard gunshots. He saw No weapons when he went to render CPR to Jordon Davis. The other 3 teens in the SUV were crying.
3:30 p.m. - Shawn Atkins was escorted from detention. He was convicted of 25 felonies & is serving a term of 7 years imprisonment since the shooting. He was unemployed, homeless and lived in his truck with his girlfriend. They were at the GATE so that she could use the restroom. He heard 2 gunshots before the SUV backed out. 4 to 5 more shots were fired as the Durango drove off. The white man took a police stance (crouched down) as he shot in the well-lit area. Atkins was the one who memorized the license plate number and gave it to the clerk.
16:08 p.m. – Mariah Gryms works at GATE as a customer service clerk and was on from 2 -10 p.m. She was behind one of the registers and could hear 3 shots and then 6 more as she concluded Dunn’s girlfriends’ transaction. The clerk couldn’t hear any loud music outside Mariah said that the defendant Dunn was shooting from inside his car.
4:35 p.m. – Lillian Christenson was Assist. Mgr. of the GATE and was in the back of the store when she heard the shots. She was not clear on how many shots she heard from outside. She saw Dunn’s girlfriend headed towards the door to get into Dunn’s car which left the scene in a calm manner. Lillian didn’t notice the red Durango outside the facility.
Once again, the Defense Attorney tried to discredit the effectiveness of the Sheriff and Police Departments.
4:58 p.m. - Samantha Eichas works at Advance Auto Parts as a delivery driver & went to the GATE station for a coffee when she heard shots fired before she arrived in the gas station. After she got to the store, a red SUV drove up with a series of 6 gunshot holes on the passenger’s side. The people who got out looked shocked. She then called 911 & reported the incident, but could not identify anyone.
5:15 p.m. – End of Day One “State of Florida vs Michael Dunn”.
