Michael Douglas to pal Jay Leno: ‘My cancer is gone'

Hollywood legend Michael Douglas appeared on The Tonight Show to share good news with his good friend Jay Leno. “My cancer is gone,” Douglas said triumphantly on Friday night. The interview shed an enlightening and emotional light on the last few months of Douglas’s battle with throat cancer.

“I got some great news last Thursday. I went in for my CAT scan and my cancer is gone. It’s great news. It’s been a struggle with the radiation and chemo. You check in like every month. I’m waiting for another two or three months before I really kick up my heels. This particular type of cancer supposedly doesn’t come back too often,” Michael Douglas told Jay Leno on Friday night’s edition of The Tonight Show. “Next time I come back, I’ll dance with you,” Douglas promised his good friend.

Michael Douglas went on to explain that the past few months have been difficult, but his children and wife have been his support system. The iconic legend told Jay Leno that his children accompanied him on his radiation treatments and were impressed by the Star Wars aspect. “They were just great.”

To celebrate the good news, Michael Douglas said that he and his wife, Catherine Zeta Jones, shared the news with his 94-year-old dad, Kirk Douglas, just this week. Douglas credits good genes for his recovery. He claims that years of smoking and drinking could have brought on the cancer, as well as stress and the environment. “I thought I was infallible.”

During his treatment, Michael Douglas lost 36 pounds, but has already gained back 12, thanks in part to a gift certificate for 500 free milkshakes that he received from Jay Leno. To celebrate his 10th anniversary, Catherine and Michael took their two children, age 10 and 7, to Disney World. Douglas said it was a very enjoyable trip, but he tired from the amount of walking throughout the parks. To keep up with his family, Michael Douglas rode behind his family in an electric cart with a hat pulled over his eyes to protect his identity.

When Jay Leno asked Michael Douglas how his life has changed since being diagnosed with cancer, the world famous actor had a lot to say. “I smell the roses. Each day is special. What really hit me was a deeper bond with family, with friends and the support I got from fans who over the years feel like they know you and share all this information with you. It was deeply moving.”

Jay Leno expressed genuine happiness and relief about his friend’s recent good news. “Not to be corny, but I’m a great believer in karma. You’re always a regular guy, not a big star,” Leno told Douglas. The two friends embraced and celebrated a great victory.
