Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones are dealing with the actor's recent diagnosis of throat cancer. At 65, the actor's previous lifestyle of smoking and bad diet are being credited to his ultimate health fate of Stage IV (4) cancer.
Is Michael Douglas' throat cancer curable?
"We think he is still in the curable category, stage IVa," says Gady Har-El, MD, chairman of the department of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at New York's Lenox Hill Hospital. "Of course we don't know, but his curability could be quite acceptable."
While doctors believe the rapid-forming cancer may be beat in Douglas, the argue his odds are around 80 percent for survival. The tumor found in Michael Douglas was said to be "walnut-sized" and doctors believe if it doesn't spread to the lymph nodes, his chances of curing the disease is better.
Har-El adds that smokers who can detect throat cancer early have a better chance of beating the disease. When throat cancer is detected early, it can "be cured 85% of the time by surgery or radiation".

Early reports from Douglas' response to his throat diagnosis included a strong-willed actor who was taking on the disease as a "curable" one. While his 40-year-old wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, released statements that she was "furious" doctors, missed the disease, Douglas has since come forward and said he's only focused on looking forward.
"Yeah, I've got cancer," Douglas said on the Late Show with David Letterman (video below). "I found out about it three weeks ago...it's throat. And I just finished my first week of radiation and chemo. And it's about an 8-week struggle."

The clinical symptoms listed for throat cancer include anything from generic throat and ear pain to difficulty swallowing to bleeding in the mouth or throat. Michael says he first felt a "sore throat in early summer" and that his larynx had been bothering him "for a while".
"I actually went through a litany of doctors and tests. They didn't find anything. And then I had a great summer after some other personal adversities...with Catherine and the kids," he said of his summer travels.
After Douglas returned he said he finally found his throat in the hands of a doctor requesting a biopsy. He says within a couple of weeks it was Stage IV cancer. Douglas says it was pretty "intense" and the chemotherapy was the most difficult part.

Douglas said he was devastated to find out he was already at Stage IV cancer and said he wishes it had been caught at Stage I.
"The thing you're always worried about is it's spreading," Douglas said to David Letterman. "I am head and neck. Nothing is going down. The expectations are good," he adds.
