The nominees for the 20th Annual SAG Awards were announced on Dec. 11 and Michael Douglas and Matt Damon received nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries. HBO’s hit TV movie “Behind the Candelabra” won the Emmy in 2013 for Best Miniseries or Movie and Michael Douglas won the Best Actor Emmy. The Liberace biopic is poised to win again, this time at the 2013 SAG Awards. As the “LA Times" posted on Wednesday morning after the nominations were revealed, “The SAGs are the first major awards nominations of the season, but they are seen as a critical indicator.”

Each year, the Screen Actors Guild, comprised solely by actors’ peers in SAG-AFTRA, name nominees in five film and eight TV categories. Approximately 100,000 SAG actors will vote to determine the winners. In a star-studded live TV event, the film and TV winners will be revealed. The 20th Annual SAG Awards will be simulcast live nationally on TNT and TBS on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PST) from the Los Angeles Shrine Exposition Center.

In May of 2013, “Behind the Candelabra” premiered on HBO and pulled in an impressive TV audience of 2.4 million viewers. It was directed by Steven Soderbergh and was based on Scott Thorson’s memoir about his life with Liberace. The plot of “Behind the Candelabra” focused on the famous pianist’s later life and his secret affair with his much younger assistant.

Michael Douglas portrayed Liberace and Matt Damon took on the role of his assistant and lover in “Behind the Candelabra.” Critics praised their performances and the juicy biopic became the highest rated made-for-TV movie in nearly a decade. Like it did at the Emmy Awards, “Behind the Candelabra” may make another statement by winning yet another coveted award.
