September 1, 2010 - Michael Douglas goes on David Letterman, is optimistic about throat prognosis

Michael Douglas made his first public appearance since his throat cancer diagnosis and came on The Late Show with David Letterman.

The actor looked great and was in good spirits as he joked with Letterman about the coincidence of his diagnosis and finding out about going on Letterman at the same time.

"We found out about it three weeks ago—just when I found out I was gonna be on your show," Douglas said and Letterman answered jokingly, "No, there can't possibly be a medical connection!"

Letterman inquired on how the Oscar winner found out about the tumor and he explained that he had a sore throat earlier on in the summer, but doctors couldn't find anything wrong. Then, when he came back from vacationing with his family, another doctor took a biopsy and found it was cancer.

The Wall Street star has already started his regimen of both chemo and radiation and will continue to undergo an eight-week-long intense treatment.

Michael Douglas expected to make full recovery from throat tumor

When the late night host inquired on why Douglas looked so good, the Oscar winner took to humor once more and replied wryly, "Because I'm on stage. Because Kirk would...you know, he'd say, ‘Son, you gotta look good. You never know when you might have cancer.'"

Douglas' recovery expectations look good and doctors believe he will respond well to treatment. Once the eight-week chemo and radiation treatments are finished, doctors will reevaluate and determine if surgery will be necessary.

Unfortunately, Douglas says he won't be able to promote the European leg of his new film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps due to his intense treatment schedule. But he is very dedicated to the movie and says it makes New York look "sexy and stunning", Douglas also boasted, jokingly, that he looked good in the movie too.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps will open in theaters nationwide on September 24.
