After it was announced that Michael Douglas is being treated for throat cancer, he discussed his diagnosis and current situation during several interviews.

Michael Douglas shared that he was told his throat cancer is stage 4 and that he is now undergoing treatment. Catching any cancer in stage 1 will give a person the best possibility for successful treatment and recovery.

Douglas reports he initially complained of a sore throat, and his symptoms were dismissed. Eventually Douglas spoke with a doctor who said a biopsy must be done. The test results revealed that he had throat cancer.

In an interview with David Letterman, Michael Douglas answered questions about his throat cancer and seemed in good spirits. Douglas was very open about his treatments and his hope for complete recovery.

There are different types of throat cancers, and many causes. Some immediately think about the use of tobacco, which could be one cause. However, inhaling certain carcinogens, such as asbestos, may contribute to some types of throat cancer. Alcohol consumption is thought to cause other types of throat cancer.

It is also reported that the human papilloma virus, usually referred to as HPV, may cause throat cancer. Those who do not have proper nutrition may be even more likely to develop this type of cancer.

Although Michael Douglas complained only of a sore throat, symptoms of throat cancer sometimes include difficulty swallowing, a cough, hoarseness, or unexplained weight loss. As these symptoms are the same as those reported with other illnesses, throat cancer may not be something a doctor will look for in a patient.

Michael Douglas explained to David Letterman and the viewing audience that he is having chemotherapy and radiation. To see this interview, please view the video at the end of this article.

I was impressed with the way Michael Douglas calmly discussed the situation and that he was upbeat about his chances of beating the cancer. It appears that he will fight it hard, so I certainly wish him the best as it is a tremendously hard battle to wage.
