Michael Douglas' bad smoking and drinking habits may have ultimately led the brilliant actor into chemotherapy and radiation for throat cancer. The Wall Street star is set to under an 8-week treatment plan to remove the tumor.
"That combination is, unfortunately, a recipe for development of a throat cancer," ABCNews.com reports Dr. Kenneth Hu, co-director of the Head and Neck Institute at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York as saying on "Good Morning America" today. "I think the fact that he's getting radiation means it's curable."
Dr. Hu's expert opinion coincides with Douglas' report to People magazine on Monday. The 65-year-old actor and husband to actress Catherine Zeta-Jones says he's "very optimistic" in expecting a full recovery after treatment. Part of that treatment will include immediate smoking cessation.
"Smoking probably caused the cancer," he said."But smoking during the radiation makes the radiation less effective."
In 1996, Douglas had said that he was unable to quit smoking after 20 years of puffing. While no reports have directly linked the smoking and drinking to the cancer, experts say the combination is most likely the cause.
