When Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones announced a break in their relationship last August, tongues immediately started wagging with divorce rumors. But according to The Inquisitr on May 9, that’s probably not going to happen. The couple have decided that their marriage is worth working on.
The marriage appeared to be on the rocks due to Michael’s battle with cancer and Catherine’s battle with bipolar disorder. Michael Douglas told CBS’s Gayle King, “Sometimes we spend more efforts with people that are strangers in terms of making an impression than the person that’s closest to us. And you just gotta remember not to take for granted that person that’s closest to you.”
He’s apparently remembered the person closest to him, Catherine Zeta-Jones, as the two have started making the rounds of red carpet events again. And this time, they’re doing it together. Michael says he learned another important lesson: “You don’t take love for granted.”
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones met at the Deauville Film Festival in 1998. They were introduced by fellow actor Danny DeVito. To hear Catherine tell it, Michael used a corny pick-up line on her and said, “I’d like to father your children.” They were married in 1999 and have two children together, a son Dylan and a daughter Carys.
The couple recently celebrated Dylan’s bar mitzvah. It was a lot of fun, but maybe a little too much for the 69-year-old dad. He told the story to the New York Post’s Page Six.
“I’m hurting. I don’t know whether it’s my groin or a hernia. I got carried away at my son’s bar mitzvah this weekend. You know they put you up in the chairs over the top -- I think something happened there.”
Michael Douglas isn’t quite as active as he once was in Hollywood, but he’s not done yet. He’s starring in “And So It Goes” with Diane Keaton, a new film due in theaters on July 11.
As Michael and Catherine head for 15 years of marriage, their fans are hoping they stay as happy together as they seem right now. Despite the age difference, they really do seem like they belong together.
