The Providence Journal reports that director Michael Corrente is still interested in making The Prince of Providence, a film about former Providence mayor Vincent “Buddy” Cianci.
The news coincides with the release of Cianci’s new memoir Politics and Pasta, in which Cianci discusses his time as mayor, corruption trial and jail time.
Corrente’s film was first announced in June of 2008 at a large press conference at Providence City Hall. At the time, Corrente set a start date of August 2008.
Corrente told The Providence Journal, “I’m still planning on making the movie in 2011.”
Corrente claims that original cast members are still in place, including Robin Williams and Oliver Platt as Cianci.
Platt was chosen after Oscar winners Nicolas Cage and Russell Crowe expressed interest in the role.
As for the nearly three year pre-production period, Corrente said, “Films like this take a long time to get made. Every film nominated this year [at the Academy Awards] was a labor of love that took much longer to get made than expected.”
Corrente’s latest directorial effort is Loosies, which stars Peter Facinelli and Michael Madsen. Filmed last year in Rhode Island and New York City, the movie is set to be released this year.
