The music of Billy Joel doesn't quite seem like it would fit in the classical genre. However, on Saturday a likeness of the Piano Man will be presenting a concert with the Colorado Symphony as soloist. The original star of the hit Broadway musical Movin Out, Michael Cavanaugh brings his collections of songs here to Denver.
Movin out featured the music of Billy Joel, in which Michael Cavanaugh was the piano front man. On Cavanaugh's website, there is a brief biography of how his career came to be. He started out in Orlando at a piano bar in Orlando cleverly named "Blazing Pianos". In January of 1999, Michael began performing at the "New York, New York" casino in Las Vegas. It is here that he met the famous Billy Joel.
Billy Joel was looking for someone to fill the role to sing his songs in the musical movin out. It didn't take him very long when he saw Michael Cavanaugh. Michael starred on the Broadway musical during its original run which ended in 2005.
Now Michael tours with his rock and roll show, which would lean heavily on Billy Joel but also some other favorites that we will just have to wait and see. Tickets are available at the CSO Box office at Boettcher concert hall. Please visit www.coloradosymphony.org for more information. The Concert starts on Saturday February 13th at 7:30 PM.
Also of note, performances of Rossini's Opera "Barber of Seville" continue on both Friday Night at 7:35 and Sunday afternoon at 2:35. Sunday is Valentines day, what a perfect afternoon for Opera.
