Michael Bloomberg talks about Hurricane Irene and 9/11 on ‘The View’

The View premiered its 15th season this morning and its very first guest was New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. Topics of discussion included his extensive preparations for Hurricane Irene and New York City’s plans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11 this Sunday.

Mayor Bloomberg on Hurricane Irene:

In an unprecedented move, Michael Bloomberg evacuated thousands of New York City residents and shut down transportation in advance of Hurricane Irene. When the ladies of The View asked the mayor if he went overboard, he replied…

North of us had a lot of damage. It was better to be safe than sorry and it was the best outcome we could have. You have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Mayor Bloomberg on 9/11:

When asked about how New York City plans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the mayor replied that it would do what’s been done ten times already. As in years past, all the 9/11 victims’ names will be read. The first day is for the families to remember their loved ones who lost their lives on 9/11. Michael Bloomberg addressed the criticism that first responders are not invited by saying…

We only have so much room. Families come first.

Mayor Bloomberg said that New York City is ready for the 10th anniversary of 9/11. More than 1,000 police officers have been trained in counter terrorism and will be on high alert this weekend. Bloomberg also said that the terrorists failed in their mission because they were unable to take away Americans' freedoms and New York City is back and better than ever.

Barbara Walters asked Michael Bloomberg if he had any ambitions for running for the presidency. He responded that he did not because he loves his job too much. The mayor also urged Americans to stand behind President Obama until the next election plays out. “We have to renew confidence in the future of America,” he said this morning on The View.
