Today Variety.com is reporting that filmmaker Michael Bay escaped injury from an attacker who was under the influence of a narcotic substance. According to Bay's spokesperson, the bizarre encounter occurred while the cast and crew were preparing to shoot scenes for the Paramount Pictures feature film 'Transformers 4' in Quarry Bay, an area beneath Mount Parker in the Eastern District of Hong Kong. An assailant first accosted several crew members before rushing onto the set and swung an air conditioning unit at Michael Bay's head.
Bay was able to avoid being hit by dodging the attacker and forcibly pull the conditioner from his attacker. Police officers employed by the production for security quickly intervened and stopped the attack. The Hong Kong police officers also clashed with three the assailants companions. All four were eventually arrested. Although Micheal Bay did not acknowledge any injuries, the police report said the director suffered a facial injury but didn't go to a hospital. No other crew members or any cast members were injured, and shooting on the film resumed without further incident.
Micheal Bay made the following statement regarding the incident on his official webpage Thursday:
"Yes, some drugged up guys were being belligerent asses to my crew for hours in the morning of our first shoot day in Hong Kong. One guy rolled metal carts into some of my actors trying to shake us down for thousands of dollars to not play his loud music or hit us with bricks. Every vendor where we shot got paid a fair price for our inconvenience, but he wanted four times that amount. I personally told this man and his friends to forget it. We were not going to let him extort us. He didn't like that answer." Bay wrote. "The man returned an hour later, carrying a long air-conditioner unit, walked right up to me and tried to smack my face, but I ducked threw the air unit on the floor and pushed him away. It took seven big guys to subdue him. It was like a zombie in Brad Pitt's movie 'World War Z.' He lifted seven guys up and tried to bite them. He actually bit into one of the guard's Nike shoe. Insane. Thank god it was an Air Max, the bubble popped, but the toe was saved. It took 15 Hong Kong cops in riot gear to deal with these punks," Bay said. "In all, four guys were arrested for assaulting the officers."
A Hong Kong police spokeswoman identified two people arrested as brothers with the surname Mak and ages 27 and 28. She said the men demanded that Bay give them 100,000 Hong Kong dollars, which is about $12,000 in U.S. currency. The younger Mak brother, who was charged with blackmail and assault on a police officer, was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, the spokeswoman said. The older bother, who complained that he was not feeling well, was arrested on a charge of common assault and assaulting a police officer, she said. Three police officers suffered minor injuries, the spokeswoman said
Before heading to Asia, 'Transformers 4' has been shooting since May, 2013 in various locations in the United States such as Austin, Chicago, Detroit, and most recently in Elmo, Washington. Producers gave a huge effort to boost the 'Transformers 4' profile in China so that it contains sufficient Chinese elements to allow it to qualify as a Sino-U.S. co-production, thus allowing it to avoid the Chinese import quota and also earn a larger share of box office earnings in what is now the second-biggest source of box office revenue in the world.
