Celebrating Black History Month with the return of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to Miami is a tradition made even more meaningful now that native son Robert Battle at the helm.
Battle, who is the company's artistic director, leads the the company in its Feb. 21-24 performances at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.
Battle, along with fellow Miami native Jamar Roberts and 30 other extraordinary dancers will move audiences during five performances featuring two special programs of premieres, new productions and repertory favorites.
In addition to new choreographic treasures, Alvin Ailey's beloved masterpiece "Revelations," an American classic acclaimed as a must-see and recognized by U.S. Senate resolution, will provide an inspiring finale of all programs.
While in Miami, the company will also perform a free performance of Ailey classics, including "Revelations," free to local students. It was just such a program that set Battle on the path that took him from Miami's poor Liberty City neighborhood to become one of the most famous figures in the cultural world.
"As a child growing up in Miami, experiencing "Revelations" at an Ailey student performance was an eye-opening moment that began my journey to the helm of leading this great company," said Battle. "Now, it is my pleasure to share the same magic with another generation," he added.
