Miami police officer receive the Medal of Herorism

Nine Miami area police officers were honored by Governor Rick Scott with the Medal of Heroism. There were recognized for heroic actions, sound judgment and service to Florida. A special ceremony was held at the Northwest District Police Department in Miami Lakes.

For the Miami-Dade Police Department honorees included Sgt. Andrew Rial, Officers Nery De Leon-Lowry, Wilfredo Sanchez, Leigha Stuber, Edwin Ramos, David Jones and Marcel Orta. They were honored for saving three people who were trapped in a burning vehicle. Miami Dade Police Detective Ronald Gooden was honored for rescuing a pregnant woman trapped in a vehicle that had been involved in crash. City of Miami Police Officer Alexi Figueroa was honored for arresting a man who was firing a gun in the direction of a super market, according to an April 28 statement from the Office of Governor Rick Scott.

In the statement, Governor Rick Scott was quoted as saying, “It is an honor to present these nine police officers from South Florida with the Medal of Heroism for going above and beyond the call of duty to save the lives of fellow Floridians,” said Scott.
