In a game that contained all of the elements of great playoff hockey, Miami of Ohio and Coach Enrico Blasi found themselves hoisting their first ever Mason Cup. The tournament was played at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI. And, for the next year, Miami of Ohio will have their banner proudly displayed as champions of this tournament.
Western Michigan University played a very gritty and tight game, but were eventually overcome by the Redhawks pressing offense, particularly on special teams. The game was physical from the start, with battles along the boards and in the corners. Miami of Ohio jumped to a 2 goal lead, but Western Michigan fought back to tie the score at 2 -2 in the third period. You can read the full game summary here.
The final blow was delivered as the Redhawks scored 3 goals over 8 minutes leaving the final score 5 - 2. However, the Broncos still walk away as champions. They have earned a place in the NCAA tournament for the first time in 25 years. Both teams were victorious in upset victories the night before as Western (4) beat the university of Michigan (1). Miami of Ohio (3) was victorious over Notre Dame (2).
The best news for both teams is that there is still more hockey to play. That, for now, will be the focus moving forward toward the NCAA championships. To be certain, the best is yet to come. However, many congratulations to Head Coach Enrico Blasi and the Redhawks. It has been a steady stream of hard work and dedication that led to this win.
For coach Blashill, his Broncos team will head to Green Bay next weekend to begin NCAA tournament play. More information on that later this week.
