The Miami Heat traded center Dexter Pittman to the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday (Feb. 21). The Heat trade brings back the rights to center Ricky Sanchez in a minor deal between the two teams. According to a report, Sanchez is still playing in Argentina, so this could be viewed as a move for the future in Miami.
In addition to giving up the young center (Pittman), Miami also sends their 2013 second-round pick to Memphis to complete the deal. There had been some hope that Pittman could find his footing on the Miami bench but he has played most of the season in the D-League. During four games with Miami this season, Pittman averaged just 1.5 points per game.
It is very likely that Sanchez will never play in the NBA, so this trade can be viewed as a way for Miami to get out of some salary. It isn't front page NBA news by any stretch, but it is certainly possible that Pittman could become an asset for the Memphis Grizzlies somewhere down the line.
This Miami Heat trade might not have been what fans expected from the team, especially because Dexter Pittman could turn into a decent role player at some point. For Memphis, this trade only comes with benefits. Now the salary of Pittman shifts to Memphis though, even if it is less than $1 million this season and slightly more than that next year.
