A free four-mile bike ride in downtown Miami aims to foster cooperation between cyclists, drivers and pedestrians

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and Miami HEAT Head Coach Erik Spoelstra are working together to raise awareness of bicycle safety. The HEAT Cycle for Safety Event takes place Saturday, April 5, with the HEAT’s Head Coach Erik Spoelstra leading a contingent of cyclists in a four-mile leisurely bicycle ride along Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami. The event is not a race, but a recreational activity designed to promote bicycle safety and cooperation amongst cyclists, drivers and pedestrians. Other Miami athletes have participated in similar safety-oriented rides.

“We are proud to join forces with the Miami HEAT to raise awareness about bicycle and pedestrian safety,” said FDOT District Six Secretary Gus Pego. “As more people move to this region, there will be more cars, more bicycles and more pedestrians. No matter what mode of transportation you use; bicycling, walking or driving, always share the road safely.”

The event will begin at 9 a.m. in Parcel B located directly behind the AmericanAirlines Arena. Coach Spoelstra has made a public service announcement promoting the event and offering safety tips. The video can be viewed online at HEAT.com/cycle. Although the event is free, participants must register for tickets by logging on to HEAT.com/cycle. Registrants will receive a free gift bag while supplies last. In addition, the first 500 people to register will receive a limited edition HEAT Youth Bicycle Helmet.

Parcel B will be open starting at 7 a.m. on April 5 and will remain open until noon. The HEAT Experience, including the HEAT Dancers, Burnie the mascot, the Xtreme Team and Banana Man, will be on hand to entertain riders both before and after the ride. Light snacks, such as fruit, water and Gatorade will be available as will bike safety inspections.

AmericanAirlines Arena is located at 601 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, Florida 33132. Free parking will be available in the P2 garage on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning at 7 a.m. on April 5.

All participants are required to wear a helmet, especially those under 16 years of age for whom wearing a bicycle helmet is mandatory pursuant to Florida law.
