As ESPN reports on November 4, the Miami Dolphins have suspended offensive lineman Richie Incognito indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team. The suspension comes after offensive lineman Jonathan Martin left the team last week following a lunchroom emotional breakdown.
The Dolphins are asking the NFL to investigate the situation further as Martin has filed a complaint of player misconduct. The team has released the following statement regarding the suspension of Incognito:
“We believe in maintaining a culture of respect for one another and as a result we believe this decision is in the best interest of the organization at this time. As we noted earlier, we reached out to the NFL to conduct an objective and through review. We will continue to work with league on the matter.”
Martin left the team because he didn’t feel he was in a safe workplace environment. Some of the allegations by Martin included harassment over money as well as text messages from Incognito to Martin that suggests an even deeper harassment.
Incognito has denied the harassment and stated via Twitter that he wants his “name cleared” and has said that the accusations is nothing but “slander”.
Incognito has been involved in other incidences on the field and was once voted the second-dirtiest player in the NFL from a player poll in the Sporting News.
Jonathan Martin’s allegations, if true, make it evident that Incognito doesn’t have much love for his own teammates either.
In the meantime, the Dolphins organization maintains that they are out for the best interest of Martin’s health. It is unknown as to when and if Martin will return to the team, but if he does, he will only return when he knows he is returning to a safe working environment.
