Miami defeats Fort Lauderdale Saturday to win D-II Championship

The Miami Rugby Football Club (RFC) defeated the Fort Lauderdale Knights RFC Saturday afternoon 37 to 10 to at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla. With this win, Miami claims the Florida Rugby Union's (FRU) Division II (D-II) Championship. Miami finishes the in-state portion of its schedule with a record of ten wins and one loss, while Fort Lauderdale finishes with seven wins and four losses.

Gainesville surprises Sarasota to seal D-III Championship

Just prior to the Miami v. Fort Lauderdale match, the Gainesville Hogs RFC took on the undefeated Sarasota Surge in Clermont to determine which club would be crowned the FRU Division III (D-II) Champions. In the game, the Hogs defeated the Surge 20 to 16 to take the D-III Championship. Both clubs finish in-state play with a record of six wins and one loss. Carlos Velazquez of Rugby in Florida interviewed Kerri O'Mally, head coach of the Gainesville Hogs, said winning the D-III Championship took "months of training, and working to minimize penalties."

While all of the details are not available regarding the next round of the D-II and D-III Championships, an anonymous source provided this much information Sunday evening about where the four Florida clubs will travel next: “As the Florida Champion we now move on to the Southern District Conference Finals May 3 and 4 in North Carolina between Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina clubs.”

UCF crushes FSU to claim SIRC Championship

In collegiate action, the University of Central Florida (UCF) Knights RFC crushed the Florida State University (FSU) Seminoles by a score of 106 to 0 Sunday afternoon in Atlanta, Ga. This victory secured the Southern Independent Rugby Conference Championship. With this win, the Knights advance to the Division I-AA Sweet Sixteen. Additional details on the next round of the playoffs, to be played the last weekend of April in Knoxville, Tenn., will be provided as they become available.
