Miami’s Heat may not have won the playoffs, but when it came to data usage at the games it was a slam dunk for Miami fans!

Fans flooded the stands with their smartphones in hand to take in the grand finale of this year’s basketball playoff action. Miami fans are increasingly using their devices to share the most memorable experiences of the home team’s playoff run – from blocks to slam dunks. That’s why AT&T worked to ensure the influx in mobile traffic that Miami basketball fans are using at the arena can be handled by its Distributed Antenna System (DAS), which helps increase cellular capacity from inside the venue.

Here’s what AT&T saw from customers using its Distributed Antenna System (DAS) network at some recent games at the basketball arena in Miami:

  • The average total data usage for the home games during this year’s playoffs from inside the arena was 177GB. 177GB is the equivalent to more than 500K social media posts with photos.
    • The average data usage during the playoffs was 47%, more than the data usage during the regular season home finale on 4/16.
  • During the final playoff home game at the arena on 6/12, Miami fans used more than 223GB across the AT&T in-venue mobile network, the highest total of any game this year at the venue.
  • Miami fans also uploaded and downloaded the most data during a single hour at the 6/12 game from 10-11pm EST when more than 59GB crossed the AT&T in-venue mobile network.
    • That’s equivalent to 168K social media posts with photos being sent or received.

And here’s what AT&T saw from customers using the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) network in San Antonio:

  • The average total data usage for the home games during this year’s playoffs from inside the arena was 138GB. 138GB is the equivalent to more than 394K social media posts with photos.
    • The average data usage during the playoffs was 84%, more than the data usage during the regular season home finale on 4/16.
  • During the final playoff home game at the arena on 6/15, San Antonio fans used more than 182GB across the AT&T in-venue mobile network, the highest total of any game this year at the venue.
  • San Antonio fans also uploaded and downloaded the most data during a single hour at Sunday’s game from 8-9pm EST when more than 43GB crossed the AT&T in-venue mobile network.
    • That’s equivalent to 122K social media posts with photos being sent or received.
