Miami Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho was named 2014 National Superintendent of the Year during a convention in Nashville, Tennessee on February 13. The award was given by the National Superintendents Association. Cavalho is in charge of a school district that includes 350,000 students and took over the district in 2008. Since then, the graduation rate has improved, according to an article by David Smiley in the February 14 Miami Herald.
"I am glad our schools leader is gaining some national recognition. The district has achieved a lot over the last few years," said Cynthia Wilkerson.
