For parents searching for strong female role models to show their daughters in today’s media-saturated world featuring negative portrayals of women, Miami Dade College’s Wolfson Campus’ gives us something we can share with our children. The college will present Little Women, the Broadway Musical, at 7 p.m., December 13 and 14. It’s a wonderful choice to kick off the holiday season.
I look forward to taking my daughter to see this play, who at age 10, already has own strong sense of self and rejects any limitations of what sports, careers or clothes a girl should adhere to.
Based on Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1869 semi-autobiographical novel, the musical focuses on the four March sisters – Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth – and Marmee, at home in Concord, Massachusetts, while the family patriarch is away at war. Little Women shows the lives of these four sisters unfold during the Civil War dealing with issues that are still relevant today.
Under the direction of Amy Ibberson and Alan Ngim, the choreography is by Lee Pugh III. The music is by Jason Howland. The lyrics were composed by Mindi Dickstein. The book is by Allan Knee.
General admission is $15; tickets for seniors, MDC faculty, students and staff (with ID) are $5.
Miami Dade College, Wolfson Campus Auditorium (Building 1/Room 1261) is located at 300 NE Second Ave., Miami, FL, 33132.
